Hey y’all, Eric (resident Texan) here. As many of you know Rick Perry will not be running for reelection in 2014 but Senator Wendy Davis (D, Fort Worth) has officially announced her candidacy for Governor of Texas. We can use all the help we can get both locally and nationally.
What it does: Abortion is prohibited at or after 20 weeks of post-fertilization. Physicians must have acting admitting privileges at a hospital no longer than 30 miles away and meet minimum standards for ambulatory surgical centers (of which only 5 do) by September 1, 2014.
What it does: Only physicians are allowed to give out abortion-inducing drugs. (This entire bill is a replica of the abortion-inducing drugs section of HB2).
HB 2 has not been passed by the Texas House. On July 2nd, the House State Affairs Committee held a public hearing for testimonies, over 1000 people signed in to talk but they only had until midnight to do so. Only less than 100 people testified and its said that the time for signing was made earlier without anyone’s knowledge but that pro-life groups were tipped off and were able to sign up first, giving the appearance that there was more support for the bill.
July 9th is the earliest the House can consider the bill.
July 8th, the Senate Health and Human Services Committee is holding another public hearing for SB 9, HB 2’s companion bill.
